This document discusses the fast growth of migration from the 1960s to the beginning of the 21st century. The authors present reasons for migration and factors facilitating it as well as its influence on both immigrants and the hosting states. The authors focus on migration within the Atlantic region, the issue of illegal immigrants in the EU, the mechanism of the Schengen system and the protection of the EU's external borders. They also emphasize immigrants' input in the economic development of their countries of origin.
