This paper 1) discusses the warming relations between Iran and Turkey, which got a boost from Tehran’s show of support for the Erdogan government in the wake of the failed July 2016 military coup, and 2) speculates on how closer relations between the two countries could affect the Sunni/Shia balance of power in the Middle East and the ongoing civil war in Syria.
