This publication discusses the conflict around Iraqi oil resources in the Basra area. It examines the political implications of the geopolitical tensions due to the fact that almost all Iraqi oil fields can be found near Basra. The author underscores the developments after the Samarra bombing of February 2006, general intra-Shiite tensions, and the questions of implementing federalism south of Baghdad and adopting a new Iraqi oil law in particular.
