This paper analyzes how direct investment abroad has turned many Spanish corporations into significant global actors. The author highlights the diversification of investment away from Latin America and to Europe, the US, and to a lesser extent, Asia. He advocates this move, as it has reduced exposure to Latin America, the most economically vulnerable area, and is producing a steady stream of income. The paper also looks at Spain's most prominent multinationals in the fields of telecommunications, oil, natural gas, petrochemicals, textiles, banks and electricity.
