This paper explores the future possibilities of EU integration for a number of the Southern Balkan states. The author states that the key to future development is likely to evolve around the question of whether the EU can adopt a balanced and sensible policy toward the claims of local nationalism and devise transition arrangements. The paper additionally examines the specific prospects of social and economic development in Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo and analyzes the historic and contemporary influences of competing US and European business models in the region.
