The 12 articles in this text focus on the promotion of transitional justice (TJ) across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), both before and after the Arab Spring. Among other issues, the articles focus on 1) the spotty conceptual foundations of transitional justice and how they have affected its application; 2) whether the pursuit of TJ actually improves human rights; 3) how Middle East states have applied the principles of truth, accountability and amnesty; 4) the relationship between transitional justice and martyrdom in North Africa after the Arab Spring; 5) political exclusion and TJ in Libya; and 6) the transitional justice lessons that we collectively can draw from the Egyptian uprising in 2011.
