This paper examines the impact Brexit may have on the social security entitlements of British citizens who’ve worked or lived in another EU member state and non-British individuals who have worked or lived in the UK. The text’s author begins her analysis by reviewing 1) the current coordination of social security entitlements under EU law; 2) UK social security payments to third-country nationals and British citizens who live in other countries; and 3) the role of the European Health Insurance card. She then discusses how a ‘hard’ Brexit might yield a “bonfire” of social security rights for British and non-British EU citizens alike.
