This paper provides an overview of the defense industry in Southeastern Europe, particularly in the countries of former Yugoslavia. The author details the transformation of the industry after the fall of communism and outlines the developmental path that since then has been taken. The paper states that international cooperation is one of the most important vehicles to promote Southeastern European defense interests abroad and outlines corresponding possibilities. The author concludes that the market opportunities for Southeastern European defense industry are not great, partly because of the previous embargo by EU member states and partly because the traditional markets in Africa, Asia and the Middle East were temporarily lost.
