This paper contains a report of a 2004 conference held by the United States Institute of Peace. The purpose of the conference was to explore, from different disciplinary perspectives, how divided societies emerging from violent confict have sought justice and reconciliation through various transitional justice mechanisms. The author defines the central issues discussed at the conference and concludes by a summary of recommendations by the conference's participants.
