This report examines the political situation in southern Mexico's Chiapas region, analyzing the impact of electoral politics and government-directed counterinsurgency movements on the general stability and development of the region. The report describes how efforts to reach a negotiated settlement have repeatedly failed and how the instability in southern Mexico also directly affects the domestic and foreign policy interests of the US. The paper calls for the US to apply pressure on Mexico for a change of policy.
