This report examines both the history and future of NATO on the occasion of the Organization's 50th anniversary. The author examines the possible challenges and potential uncertainties awaiting NATO in the 21st century and analyzes whether the Organization is being transformed into an institution for crisis management and peace support missions. The report concludes by emphasizing the need for NATO to develop a long-term vision and outline of what the continued structure of the trans-Atlantic alliance and the pan-European security architecture should look like in the long-term future.
