The paper investigates characteristics of the Iraq's post-Saddam leadership, looks at the political parties and their constituents and addresses the tensions between those who spent years in opposition and those who worked under Saddam Hussein. In particular, the paper traces the development of the United Iraqi Alliance, the Kurdish Alliance, the Iraqi Accord Front (Tawafuq) and the Iraqi National List (Iraqiyyah). The paper finds that despite strong identification with ethnic and sectarian blocs, there is a lot of fragmentation and diversity of views within these alignments.
