This paper discusses the political situation in Bangladesh, commenting on democracy, the political system and the role of Islamism. The paper asks what is at stake, identifies origins of the secular and Islamist divide and assesses the role of Islam in the country's political life. Subsequently, the paper investigates the response of both the civil society and the opposition and underlines the importance of the 2007 elections. The authors find that principles of Bangladesh's secular democracy have faced steady erosion.
