Popular protests are rumbling across Sudan, with protestors demanding that President Omar al-Bashir resign in light of economic mismanagement and corruption. After exploring the economic grievances behind the protests, the publication outlines three possible scenarios on what could happen next: 1) the president could stay in power by suppressing protests by force; 2) the protests could oust Bashir, which could usher in a new government or trigger further instability; and 3) Bashir could resign, thereby allowing for a leadership change that could mollify protestors. The text’s authors conclude that foreign governments should create incentives for Bashir to step down in order to improve prospects for a peaceful transition in Sudan.
