This publication analyzes the economic and political effects of China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). The author describes the 2003 status for different Chinese industries and evaluates which economic sectors are still in need for reform. According to the author, it is unclear which way the Chinese leadership will lean when confronted by conflicts between domestic cries of temporary pain and international obligations.
