This paper analyzes the roots of the conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa in the 20th century. It looks at some general features of the African underdevelopment predicament, which the author claims can offer insights into causes, and more importantly, the escalation in scale of African conflicts. The paper examines the reasons for fighting in post-independence Africa and discusses the role of ethnicity, ideology and colonial legacy.
