This paper assesses the threats to the stability of the Caucasus-Caspian region. It analyzes declared policies and areas where the interests of the US, Western Europe, Russia, Iran, Turkey and minor regional players cut across each other. The author emphasizes three issues of contention: the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline, the Western cooperation with Georgia and Azerbaijan on security problems and the talks with leaders of North Caucasus ethnic groups.
