This paper examines the prospects for the TRACECA transport project, which in its conception is planned to avoid Russian and Iranian territory. The paper describes the routes and the interests of Western countries in the project and outlines several European-sponsored conferences on trans-continental transportation. The author also discusses the Russian position concerning trans-Caspian transport and the related challenges.
