This paper examines the geostrategic importance of Kaliningrad to Russia. The paper outlines the historical background and the socio-economic state of the region and analyzes the political situation in light of the election of the governor-admiral in November 2000. The author assesses the region's relationship with Russia and the geo-strategic importance of Kaliningrad to Russia, especially in relation to NATO and EU expansion.
