This essay examines the likely nature of conflict between 2000 and 2020 in which British forces may become involved, either as warfighters or in operations other than war. The author argues that the period is unlikely to see a direct military threat to the UK and therefore concentrates the analysis on the regions where pressures for intervention might lead to British participation in multinational coalitions. The paper drafts the predicted global trends between 2000 and 2020 and looks closer upon the US, Europe, Eurasia, Middle East, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
