This report focuses on the largely nonviolent revolution that led to the removal of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic from office and to the rise to power of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS). The paper reviews the course of events with a focus on the opposition movement, international assistance and cooperation among different groups. The author pays particular attention to the role of nonviolence in the revolution and the role of Serbia's civil society. The paper stresses the importance of democracy for Serbia's and the whole region's peace and stability.
