This paper investigates the link between prison reform and the success of de-radicalization programs aimed at Islamic jihadi prison inmates in Indonesia. It introduces the state of the Indonesian prison system with a focus on legal, organizational and staff issues and comments on the pervasiveness of violence and corruption. Subsequently, the paper discusses approaches to the handling of jihadi prisoners and reviews the strategies of several de-radicalization programs, including religious and economic proposals. The paper argues that prison reform is urgently needed for many reasons but helping buttress de-radicalization programs is one.
