This paper reviews the history of democracy in Africa and how this particular form of governance is likely to evolve in the future. More specifically, the text explores the developmental impact of greater political pluralism and competitive democratic systems on the continent and wonders whether authoritarian development models would be more suitable for poor African countries. Ultimately, the paper’s author concludes that as countries climb the income ladder and become more socially and economically complex, democracy does indeed contribute to good governance, steady development and economic growth.
