This paper summarizes the economic and socio-political transformations that Spain has undergone since it first joined the European Community. It also presents the main challenges facing the country, both at home and abroad. The authors conclude that Spain has become greatly Europeanized, but has also enriched the Mediterranean and Latin American dimensions of the EU and helped develop the Union's economic and social cohesion, European citizenship and the Common Space of Freedom, Security and Justice.
