This paper analyzes China's and Venezuela's use of public diplomacy to achieve international prominence, often referred to as 'new propaganda' or 'post-modern propaganda.' It describes how in spite of the countries' obvious differences, both have implemented ambitious campaigns to influence public opinion in other countries in order to win support for their external activities. The author also maintains that both authoritarian regimes have benefited greatly from the criticism that has been directed at the US since the start of the war on terror and the war in Iraq.
