This paper examines the conditions for social development in all the countries of South Asia in the wider context of persisting poverty and ongoing social-development efforts. It looks at the pervasiveness of poverty in the region and presents socio-economic country profiles. Subsequently, it puts forward recommendations for an effective development agenda. The author highlights the need for accelerating investments in education and health in order to mitigate social and economic vulnerability.
