This paper examines the most important political events in Ecuador in the past two years. It describes the ouster of President Lucio Gutiérrez and the election of Rafael Correa. The author offers general explanations to these events and uses them as a basis to explain the longer-term causes of the constant instability in Ecuadorean politics.
