This paper examines the potential for growth in relations between China and Latin America and discusses what the two sides expect to gain from each other. The author argues that although both have gained from having closer relations, their respective expectations are asymmetrical. China is realistic and pragmatic. But the expectations of Latin America are marked by assigning an element of magic to the Chinese presence in its region, treating China as a savior in the face of other countries viewed as traditional enemies. Most importantly, relations between China and Latin America do not depend on political or ideological factors.
