Since the start of the Ukraine crisis in 2013/2014, the Baltic States have become a collision zone between Russia and the West. In response, the authors of this brief argue that the US and NATO need to adopt a long-term strategy where the US 1) publicly and clearly signals that its interests are at stake in the Baltic region; 2) commits itself, along with its allies, to Baltic defense; 3) broadens its actual military presence in the Baltic Sea; 4) works with the Baltic States on military transformation; and 5) engages more closely with other countries in the broader Baltic Sea region, particularly Sweden.
