This publication addresses Russia's desire to expand its influence in the Balkans. The author argues that Russian energy interests are a key means of enhancing the country's influence in the region and that the Balkans and southeastern Europe are key parts of its energy strategy toward the EU. The author also assumes that the possible growth of the Russian navy in the Mediterranean may also increase southeastern Europe's strategic importance to Russia.
