This paper analyzes Kosovo’s independence in terms of the right to self-determination. The main point of discussion is whether a right conceived for colonial peoples can be applied to so-called national peoples. The analysis shows the clash between law and politics. International law backs the position of Serbia granting Kosovo autonomy that borders on independence. Politics displays the US' and most EU members' perception that the Albanian majority in Kosovo cannot stand being part of Serbia, which again inclines those countries to yield to secessionist pressure.
