This report explores how Australia could contribute to the UN Global Compact on Refugees, which aims to improve the global governance of migration and refugees. Following a brief overview of the Compact’s negotiation process, the text's author suggests that potential contributions should focus on 1) technical and financial support to new resettlement countries; 2) capacity development for Southeast Asian partners, and 3) leveraging private sector support. He also calls on Australia to conduct an internal review to determine the compatibility of its existing asylum and refugee policy with the Compact.
