This study examines the current strengths and weaknesses of the US, China, India, Russia and the EU, as well as how their power may rise or fall during the rest of the 21st century. In particular, the authors explore several possible great power configurations that may come to define what form of multipolar world order will emerge following the relative decline of the US. They find that the least likely configuration is Vladimir Putin’s vision for a global order in which the "others” all work together to contain the US. Indeed, they suggest a far more probable outcome will involve a Sino-Russian alliance on the one hand, and US alliances with the EU and India on the other.
