This paper examines the evolution of language requirements in the immigration policies of host countries. The author identifies three general trends. The first trend is the extension of rules incorporating language requirements for immigrants to be allowed into countries. The second trend is the application of mechanisms to make sure immigrants know the local language. The third trend is to broaden the spectrum of which groups of people must be tested and increase the number of times during the immigration process that foreigners seeking entry must show their language skills.
