This paper evaluates the status of the Cuban economy after Fidel Castro's resignation. The author also analyzes the debate that emerged after a speech Raúl Castro delivered in July 2007 and explores the course of possible reforms. He explains that agricultural reforms have been initiated, but the most essential one, namely granting autonomy to the cooperatives, has not yet been decreed. In the meantime, pressure from the people is increasing. If reforms only go as far as marginal changes, frustration will grow. If Raúl Castro enacts deep reforms, there will be an increase in production and living standards.
