This paper examines the historical background of Islamist militancy and terrorism by outlining the story of Afghan mujahedin who fought alongside Azeri forces in Nagorno-Karabakh between 1993 and 1995. The author analyzes not only the role of the foreign mujahedin in this particular conflict but also their possible impact on future events and their role in the global jihad which slowly emerged during the mid-1990s.
