This paper examines the perception of a militant Islamist wave sweeping the globe from the Middle East, radicalizing once peaceful Muslim communities around the world. It does so by exploring the impact a number of Islamist and "neo-fundamentalist" currents from the Middle East have had in Indonesia. The authors outline the many meanings of jihad and radical religious movements and examine how these ideas spread from the Middle East to Indonesia via human movements, education or the internet. Several policy implications are outlined.
