This paper analyzes the Australian-US security alliance from a historical point of view. The author addresses the questions of how this alliance has survived for more than 50 years and how Australian governments ensure that it retains public support for another 50 years? His focus includes the pre-World War II years, the period from ANZUS to Vietnam, the 1970s and 1980s and finally the years of Prime Minister John Howard.
