Refugees and migrants are increasingly fleeing their point of origin together, which has led to a blurred phenomenon known as “mixed migration.” This analysis focuses on the often deadly exodus that’s specifically occurring along the Central Mediterranean maritime route. While doing so, the text also investigates the underlying causes of mixed migration, which is now more attributable to ‘push’ rather than ‘pull’ factors, and what policy adjustments the EU needs to make in response.
