This publication looks at Russia’s contemporary military power in the Indo-Asia–Pacific. More specifically, it looks at 1) the evolution of Russia’s strategic and defense engagement in the region, including Moscow’s regional defense strategy, and 2) major modernization trends in Russian military power east of the Urals over the past six years and patterns in operational and exercise activity. The author contends that while an overwhelming belief in the West is that Russia is out of the Indo-Asia–Pacific strategic equation, and that it has no means to rebuild and sustain its military power in the region, developments over the past half-decade show the opposite.
