This brief argues that while mineral extraction is a potential source of revenue for Afghanistan, many mines are being illegally exploited. This not only harms the country´s economy, it is also having the effect of fostering conflict over ownership and control of mines. To tackle the issue, the text´s authors advise that Afghan authorities should 1) legalize artisanal mining; 2) formalize the benefits of mining for the local communities; and 3) actively fight corruption.
