This publication examines the history of China’s maritime initiatives and its maritime ambitions today, particularly with regards to Beijing’s One Belt, One Road strategy. A key insight outlined by the text's author is that the Northern Sea Route is becoming an essential part of China's current strategy and that Beijing is already on its way to becoming a global maritime power. As a result, it is unlikely that China will continue to accept its current passive role as an observer in the Atlantic Council. Further, China’s policy combined with current global political trends could eventually lead to the militarization of parts of the Arctic Ocean.
