This publication outlines how hostile states use international political dark money to subvert liberal democracies’ political systems. It illustrates the shortcomings of most states' campaign finance regulations in dealing with this threat by analyzing three case studies. The text's authors examine 1) the opaque structures through which millions of euros are spent in support of Germany’s Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) party, 2) the unknown origin of the donation money that helped fund the pro-Brexit campaign, 3) the myriad of donations to Donald Trump’s campaign, which are untraceable, as donors of sums under 200$ do not have to be identified under US federal law, and more.
