Why have Japan’s government and businesses been so critical of the UK’s decision to leave the EU? This text argues that it’s because Brexit will change the ‘operating landscape’ for Japan and create huge uncertainty for the country. Given these truths, the UK government and EU authorities will need to be acutely aware of the strategic role that Japan plays on the international scene and conduct their negotiations accordingly.
