This paper calls for the Australian government to engage more actively in the public debate over the Papua conflict. The author argues that supporters of the cause for West Papuan self-determination dominate the debate and fail to recognize the importance of Indonesia's sovereignty. The paper employs an historical perspective that focuses on Papua's incomplete integration into Indonesia and concludes by offering alternatives for Australian foreign policy toward Papua and Indonesia.
