This paper argues that regional action is needed to curb the rapid depletion of fishing stocks in Southeast Asia. Low levels of fish in the region’s waters are encouraging illegal incursions into Australia’s northern fisheries, which are in regulated waters. Moreover, high rates of fishing are putting at risk the livelihood of up to 100 million people already living in abject conditions. The author concludes by positing what a multilateral regulatory framework for regional cooperation and fishery sustainability may look like.
