This paper provides a comparison of the two Russian intervention operations into Chechnya. The author analyzes the 1994 -1996 military intervention, examines the inter-war period and looks at the campaign which followed the "invasion" of Dagestan on 2 August 1999 and ended with Chechnya's subsequent occupation by federal forces. He concludes that the second invasion allowed Russia to implement deep-laid military plans, which originated from the military failure in the first conflict, to make another attempt to bring Chechnya back within the fold of the Russian Federation.
