This paper focuses on the violent dynamics during the Russian counterterrorist operation in Chechnya in 1999 and 2000. The author lists atrocities that have been committed against the civilian population, raising the questions of stress, brutalization and the need for psychological rehabilitation. He also notes Islamic, extremist views about prisoner execution. The author claims that Moscow’s operation was more directed against the civilian population than toward the eradication of terrorism.
