This paper addresses the situation in the region of the Pankisi Gorge in Georgia. The author discusses the boundary issue between Chechnya, Dagestan, Georgia and Azerbaijan, the region’s ethnic composition, its importance for Chechen refugees and fighters, and the possibility of a Russian intervention. He argues that Russian intentions are rather focused on combating Chechen separatists than the claimed Muslim extremists. He concludes with strategic recommendations for Georgian and US involvement in order to achieve a stable situation in the region.
