This paper addresses the preparatory phase of the Chechen presidential elections of 29 August 2004. The author examines the government power structures and the candidates with their affiliations inside Chechnya and to the Russian federal government. He underlines the need for free elections in order to bring peace to Chechnya and he predicts that Moscow’s continued support for the Kadyrov clan will exacerbate tension within the Republic.
